fellowship into a biotech company

my postdoc fellowship into a biotech company. They really wanted someone with my background back Magnet toys and I was able to get a great deal with ~ 50% my own research and 50% supervising company projects in which I was also really interested and learning. If the science or the people in the company had not been interesting, I would not have gone.

After a couple of years, personnel changes above (frequent in industry), and changes in programs as we completed the ones I was hired into, changed the flavor– Magnetic toys in a small company one can still be learning strong Neodymium magnets things and being challenged. However, finally after 4 years, with offers from industry and academia, I missed the latter more and made the move.

Since being “back” I have gone from Instructor to Assistant Professor (on academic time scale; patience can be a virtue in academia !), obtained various grants along the way, published plenty of papers, Magnetic toys maintained my interest in translational and therapeutically oriented as well as basic research. There is a market for this approach at least in major academic medical centers, where the majority of researchers (clinicians as well as scientists) still focus on basic research, and where full-time clinicians are kept fully busy!

The team atmosphere of company research has increasing value in academia, both with “big science’ (genomics, proteomics, etc.) and to leverage more limited resources. Collaborations can also be one of the more fun aspects, with all the interesting characters involved! I would disagree about absence of grant experience in industry (“It’s nearly impossible to get a grant in industry because many companies forbid them, Pollock says”), having briefly been Principal Investigator on an NIH SBIR and considering STTR as well. Even ‘Big Pharma’ may avoid classic grants, Magnetic toys not government contracts.

I would add that my biotech experience has also helped me interact and collaborate with colleagues in industry. This includes patent support and valuable sponsored research funding, which can be more flexible than NIH-type funding to help initiate ‘riskier’ research and help carry one through. This can be great both for facilitating projects of mutual interest and personally profitable (for example patent license fees and consulting), something else which is not usually available in industry and which can therefore help mitigate the cost (in salary reduction) of returning to academia.

Finally, partly because of the relative speed of academic life versus business decisions (which can be particularly arbitrary in a strong Neodymium magnets industry like Biotech), job security is certainly much less volatile and there is the supposed ‘Holy Grail’ of tenure, although that is gradually changing. Overall, I learnt a lot in industry. I have no regrets going and none about “coming back”–so far!
